Our Firm History
Ostrolenk, Faber, Gerb & Soffen dates back to the late 1920s, when Samuel Ostrolenk, an Examiner in the United States Patent Office, decided to open up his own law firm in Washington D.C. He later moved his practice to New York. While working on a complex litigation case in the late 1930s, Mr. Ostrolenk met trial lawyer Sidney Faber. Mr. Faber’s substantial litigation experience and his aptitude for understanding new technologies and complicated inventions founded the basis for their relationship.
By 1939, Samuel Ostrolenk had moved his practice to 10 East 40th Street in midtown Manhattan. It is in that space that Ostrolenk continued to grow the practice for the next 35 years. The firm prospered by specializing in the intellectual property areas of patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
On January 1, 1948, Ostrolenk and Faber formally signed papers to change the firm name to Ostrolenk & Faber. By the mid 1950s, they had added two new partners, Bernard Gerb and Marvin Soffen. The following decade, the firm officially became known as Ostrolenk, Faber, Gerb & Soffen, a leading intellectual property law firm.
In 1974, Ostrolenk moved its offices to 260 Madison Avenue. Requiring still larger space, the firm eventually moved again to its present location at 1180 Avenue of the Americas.
Over the years, Ostrolenk has grown by adding lawyers with specific and diverse undergraduate degrees in order to be able to provide the highest quality service to its growing number of clients. At the same time that the firm increased its client base, many original clients were also growing with increasing needs for its IP legal services.
Today, with more than 25 attorneys and offices in New York City and Washington D.C., we are considered one of the country’s leading intellectual property law firms. With thousands of clients, many of whom have been with us through decades and generations, and with new generations of gifted attorneys, we constantly seek to better serve our growing number of clients. We take pride and care in ensuring that we provide our clients with the highest quality, the greatest integrity, and the best legal counsel and support possible to protect their intellectual property rights.
