There are many advantages to working at a small firm rather than a large firm with a corporate type environment. For example, we provide even our most junior associates with a substantial amount of responsibility. Patent and trademark prosecutors work directly with a partner on applications and amendments filed in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or the U.S Copyright Office. Litigators get substantively involved in cases, rather than drafting research memos and reviewing documents.
Associates here also have a significant amount of client contact. This allows the associate to become involved in projects from beginning to end, rather than working in piece-meal, a practice common to larger firms. We find that this direct contact also avoids miscommunication and saves the client money.
Associates at Ostrolenk Faber will also gain broad experience across multiple practice areas. We do not separate our attorneys by practice area. Our litigators work in all phases of intellectual property litigation. A patent litigator can work on trademark cases, and if a prosecutor demonstrates an interest in, and has the ability to handle, litigation matters, we encourage the crossover. A well-rounded practice makes for a stronger, more versatile attorney to better serve our clients.
At Ostrolenk Faber, we want associates to become well rounded. We encourage our associates to join associations, write articles and speak publicly. Such extracurricular activities enable our associates to gain expertise in a particular issue and provide exposure to other practitioners and potential clients. This also attracts clients to the firm, a practice we strongly encourage. Many large firms actively discourage associates from bringing in new work.
Ostrolenk Faber is a highly collegial law firm. We encourage interaction between partners and associates through an open door policy. And when not discussing legal issues in the confines of a lawyer’s office, every day all of our attorneys openly converse over lunch sponsored by the firm. Conversations range from interesting legal issues and firm practice to current events and recreational activities.
